Trim/Sub-Trim

The procedures for setting trim and sub-trim are essentially the same. If you have an inexpensive radio with a helicopter/radio combination, it probably isn't programmable and doesn't have the ability to set sub trim. In the future we may have more on programming radios and radio settings but for now, in this exercise, we'll give the abbreviated version.

As always, before you start, check your model and radio. Make sure everything appears in good working condition and batteries are strong.

Place all trim settings to the neutral positions. If your radio has sub-trim functions, you'll want to make all adjustments there. If not, make the adjustments on your trim settings. Follow all instructions provided with your radio/helicopter.

Put your helicopter back in your "helipad" that you prepared for hovering practice. Throttle up and lift your helicopter until you can feel that it's out of influence of the ground. For this exercise, the less wind, the better. Note that when you're first lifting off, the model will want to sweep to the left. That's normal but after you're off the ground, that effect should subside.

Now the model is hovering. Slowly return the aileron and elevator control to center and see which direction your helicopter flies. Regain control and set the helicopter back down. Make any appropriate adjustments to your radio. Return to a hover and repeat the process until the helicopter will more or less hold it's position when the stick is in neutral positon.

A properly adjusted model/radio combination will make your life much easier.
